Description

These regular lilacs (syringa vulgaris) thrive in Alaska and provide beautiful flowers with impressive fragrance. They come in 1-gallon pots.

Lilacs are a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that provides beautiful and fragrant flowers in the early summer. 

Planting:

Plant lilacs 6-10 feet apart and the same level as they were grown in the nursery. Dig holes at least 12” square. Lilacs prefer full sun and will produce more blooms in a favored location. Most lilacs will take 3-4 years before they bloom.

Pruning:

Lilacs don’t typically need to be pruned until they are 6-8 years old. Cut flowering stems to bring in the house to add color and fragrance, and remove any blooms left on the tree before they start developing seeds. After the lilacs have bloomed, quickly do any other pruning you desire. Do not prune in late summer or early spring, as the flowers bloom on the previous year’s growth.

Pests:
Moose love to eat lilacs, so precautions should be made to prevent unnecessary losses.
